PLATE BOUNDARIES
Types of Plate and Movement
***Types of Plate Boundaries
Three types of plate boundaries
Know: the different types of Boundaries and exhibited movement.
PLATE BOUNDARIES
- Convergent Plate
- Divergent
- Transform Fault
Divergent Plate
plates move apart, creating a zone of tension
Convergent Plate
moving toward each other, plates collide. Philippine plate & Eurasian plate.
Transform Fault
plates slide or grind past each other without diverging or converging. San Andreas fault bounded by North American & Pacific plate.
Activities!
Let's proceed!
Activity 2: Let's Mark the Boundaries!
Objectives
Describe the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and major mountain belts.
Determine the scientific basis for dividing the Lithospheric plates.
Activity 2: Let's Mark the Boundaries!
Materials
Figure 5: Map of earthquake distribution
Figure 6: Map of active volcanoes of the world
Figure 7: Mountain ranges of the world
marking pens (two different colors)
Two pieces plastic sheet for book cover, same size as a book page
Procedures - PART A
Let's mark the boundaries!
-
Study Figure 5 showing the earthquake distribution around the world.
-
Trace the approximate locations of several earthquake “clusters” using a marking pen on one of the plastic sheets.
Procedures - PART B
Let's mark the boundaries!
-
Study the map of active volcanoes in Figure 6.
Procedures - PART C
Let's mark the boundaries!
-
On the second plastic sheet, sketch the approximate locations of several volcanoes using a marking pen.
-
Place the earthquake plastic sheet over the volcano plastic sheet.
-
Compare the location of majority of earthquake epicenters with the location of volcanoes around the world
